| Subject: | Resolution Denouncing President Trump's Derogatory Remarks on Caribbean and African Nations |
| In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution denouncing the recent hateful and racist speech used by the President of the United States in reference to Caribbean and African countries. As widely reported by the media, the president used a disparaging term to describe countries with predominately nonwhite citizens in a meeting with several United States Senators and other high-ranking officials when discussing immigration reform. President Trump is reported to have specifically referenced Haiti, El Salvador, and “African countries” as “S-holes” whose emigrants should not be accepted by the U.S., preferring citizens of predominately white countries such as Norway. Following reports of the remark, UK-based newspaper The Guardian reported that “US diplomats around the world were summoned for formal reproach…the UN said it was impossible to describe his remarks as anything other than racist, while the Vatican decried Trump’s words as ‘particularly harsh and offensive.’” Beyond tarnishing America’s global reputation, the use of such a startling and vulgar term to characterize entire countries, many of whom are allies in the War Against Terrorism and international trading partners with the U.S., denigrated the humanity of millions of people. As leader of the free world, it is the responsibility of the President of the United States to be an example of our historically radical precedent of welcoming people of all nations – E Pluribus Unum. President Trump’s hostile indifference toward the humanity of people from less developed countries, specifically countries predominately of color, cannot go unchallenged. I would urge my colleagues to support this important resolution so that we may re-assert the equal value of humanity for all of Earth’s people and condemn President Trump’s un-American hate speech for what it is.
