Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 23, 2017 03:03 PM
From: Senator Judith L. Schwank
To: All Senate members
Subject: Fibromuscular Dysplasia Month

In the near future I will propose a resolution designating March 2017 as Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD) Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

FMD is a rare disease that primarily affects women between the ages of 20 and 60 years old. One in 25 women is impacted by it. FMD causes abnormal cell growth in arterial walls, leading to blood pressure complications that include aneurysms and tearing of blood vessels. Because many of its symptoms are common to other causes, it usually is detected only after a serious incident has occurred, or coincidentally in the course of other medical examinations. Because it is so rare, patients and their families typically bear the burden for educating others, including physicians, and raising funds for awareness and research.

Please consider adding your recognition to the importance of raising awareness for this rare but serious disease. Members who co-sponsored a similar resolution I offered last session, SR 304, include Senators Fontana, Sabatina, Argall, Wozniak, Brewster, Blake, Vulakovich, Rafferty, Browne, Greenleaf, Dinniman, Costa, Farnese, Boscola, Mensch, Reschenthaler, Aument and Hughes.
