| Subject: | Providing Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters with Blood Type Identification Badges |
| In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation that will allow police officers and firefighters to wear a badge identifying their blood type. Police and fire departments across the Commonwealth will offer to provide their members with these badges to wear while on duty. While stationed in Baghdad, Iraq as a US Navy JAG, we had a common practice of writing our blood type on the t-shirt under our uniform with a permanent marker prior to convoys. This ensured that medics and hospital personnel could quickly and accurately identify the needs of wounded service members in an emergency. By providing this option to easily identify their blood type on their uniforms, we can better protect officers and firefighters and provide them with faster medical treatment. The time taken to correctly identify their blood type could be the difference between life and death in an emergency situation. Efforts such as this provide additional protections to the men and women who keep us safe and maintain order in our communities. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
