Subject: | Gun, weapon or drug offense consequence education |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would require at least one hour of instruction per year for high school students to learn about the consequences of convictions for gun, weapon or drug violations. I believe that if high school students understand the ramifications of using drugs, weapons or guns in the commission of a crime they will be deterred from engaging in behavior that will impact them for the rest of their lives. My belief is that teenagers, if provided with information about the seriousness of crimes dealing with drugs, weapons or guns, may be dissuaded from becoming involved in crime. Under my plan, representatives of the Pennsylvania State Police, working in concert with the state Department of Education, would develop age-appropriate materials detailing the consequences of convictions for drug, weapon or gun offenses. State troopers or local law enforcement officers would be required to provide the instruction. Law enforcement would be reimbursed for providing the instruction.
