| Subject: | Resolution - Red Ribbon Week |
| I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing October 23rd to October 31st 2015 as “Red Ribbon Week”. Red Ribbon Week raises awareness of drug use and the problems related to drugs facing our community, and encourages parents, educators, business owners, and other community organizations to promote drug-free lifestyles. The red ribbon symbolizes a continuing commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs in our communities. In 1985, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique S. "Kiki" Camarena was killed by drug traffickers. Shortly after Camarena's death, citizens from his hometown of Calexico, California, began wearing red ribbons to remember him and commemorate his sacrifice. Congress established Red Ribbon Week in 1988. I am lucky to have an organization within my district, the “Hanover Area Young Marines” that focuses their efforts in drug awareness to children to make them aware of drug abuse and addiction. Recently, this group was awarded the “Kiki” Camarena Award from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Organizations like the Hanover Area Young Marines will be participating in Red Ribbon Week throughout the Commonwealth. As stewards of the Commonwealth, we must work collectively to spread awareness about drug abuse. Please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation. |
