MEMORANDUM

From: Senator Rob Teplitz and Sen. Andrew E. Dinniman, Sen. Daylin Leach, Sen. Judith L. Schwank
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution – Recognition of the Jewish High Holy Days including Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur

In the near future, we plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the observance of the Jewish High Holy Days beginning with Rosh Hashanah and concluding with Yom Kippur; and acknowledging the importance and sacred nature of this time of year that is observed by Jewish families across the Commonwealth.

To provide some perspective as to the importance of the religious observance of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, each year Israeli businesses, airports, buses, and broadcast stations are shut down in honor of the holidays as Jewish people all over the world celebrate these holiest of days.

Sundown on Sunday, September 13, 2015, marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year, 5776. It also is the beginning of the High Holy Days, or Yamim Noraim, meaning "Days of Awe," which is celebrated over a ten-day period.

During this holiest of Jewish holidays, Jewish residents of this Commonwealth will fast, attend synagogue, seek forgiveness from the Creator for their sins and renew their commitment to doing that which is right.

We hope you will join us in doing that which is right by acknowledging the importance of this most sacred time by showing your continued respect for and your dedication to the Jewish families of the Commonwealth by co-sponsoring this resolution proclaiming "L'Shanah Tovah" - a happy and peaceful New Year to all.
