Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 1, 2015 11:50 AM
From: Senator Camera Bartolotta
To: All Senate members
Subject: Native American Heritage Month Resolution - November 2015

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution designating the month of November 2015 as “Native American Heritage Month” in Pennsylvania to recognize the accomplishments of the people who were the original inhabitants, explorers and settlers of the United States.

The quest for national recognition honoring Native Americans began in the early 20th Century as a private effort. As far back as the late 1970s, Congress has enacted legislation and subsequent presidents have issued annual proclamations designating a day, week or month to celebrate and commemorate the nation’s Native Americans and Alaska Natives. In 2009, Congress passed and the president signed legislation that established the Friday immediately following Thanksgiving Day of each year as “Native American Heritage Day.”

As a descendant of the Cherokee tribe and a member of the Choctaw tribe of Oklahoma, I ask that you join me to cosponsor this resolution in an effort to acknowledge the contributions of Native Americans and indigenous people who have significantly influenced our history and culture.
