Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 8, 2015 03:56 PM
From: Senator Christine M. Tartaglione
To: All Senate members
Subject: Sen. Tartaglione - Year of the Borinqueneers Resolution

In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution recognizing 2015 as the Year of the Borinqueneers in honor of the members of the 65th Infantry Regiment who defended the United State of America from 1899 to 1956.

The 65th Regiment’s members became known as the “Borinqueneers” in honor of their native Puerto Rico, which their indigenous people named “Borinquen.” They answered the call of duty by volunteering to fight on behalf of the U.S., becoming the only active, all-Latino military unit in the history of the United States Army. During World War I, World War II and the Korean War, the Borinqueneers displayed valiant and meritorious service to this country. While serving the U.S., these soldiers earned 628 Bronze Stars, 258 Silver Stars, 10 Distinguished Service Crosses and more than 2,700 Purple Hearts.

Unfortunately, their many contributions have failed to receive the admiration and gratitude they deserve. As such, I would like to recognize the more than 20,000 Borinqueneers for their bravery, dedication and sacrifice to this nation.

In honor of these men, who fought courageously and selflessly for the United States for over half a century, please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution.
