Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 2, 2015 11:37 AM
From: Senator Rob Teplitz
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution – Workers’ Memorial Day

I will soon be introducing a resolution designating April 28, 2015, as "Workers' Memorial Day" in Pennsylvania.

Workers' Memorial Day is observed each year throughout the world in honor of our fellow workers, friends and family members who have lost lives or suffered injuries or illnesses as a result of workplace accidents. This day also commemorates the anniversary of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), which took effect on April 28, 1971.

Throughout the industrial history of this state, Pennsylvania residents have been alerted all too frequently of terrible workplace accidents and have heard calls for safety measures by workers in local industries such as mining and manufacturing. In past decades, elected officials and business leaders responded by approving and implementing important workplace protections and safety regulations, like OSHA, which offer protections to workers in many sectors. Workers' Memorial Day reminds us of the importance of these laws and regulations and underscores the need to remain attentive to the safety of our all of our workers.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, during 2012, nearly 4,400 workers suffered fatal workplace injuries in the United States - with 163 workplace deaths in Pennsylvania. Nationally, more than 3 million nonfatal injuries were reported to result from accidents at work. Experts further estimate that an additional 50,000 fatalities resulted from illnesses or diseases contracted as a result of workplace exposures.

This resolution will provide the Senate of Pennsylvania an opportunity to honor the thousands of individuals throughout the United States who have succumbed to workplace fatalities as well as the millions who suffer workplace injuries and extend our sympathies to the colleagues, family and friends of those who have been lost. It asserts the value of each and every member of our workforce and reaffirms our commitment to safe working environments.

This resolution has been previously introduced in the House by Representative Pam Snyder. I thank her for her dedication to our workers and for her cooperation in introducing this resolution in the Senate.

Please join me in honoring these men and women by co-sponsoring this resolution.
