| Subject: | School-based Child-care Assistance Act |
| I am reintroducing Senate Bill 125, enacting the School-based Child-care Assistance Act, to encourage and support extended day child-care services in public and private schools for school-age children for the period of time before and after the school day. Across the country there are more than fifteen million school-age children who are on their own after school while their parents work. These children often are left unattended and unsupervised and face dangers such as physical harm, sexual exploitation, emotional distress, and developmental deficiencies. This legislation establishes a grant program that provides an incentive to school districts and private schools to establish or contract for extended day school-based child-care programs. The Department of Public Welfare will oversee the grant program. A school district or private school will receive a grant for each school-age child enrolled in the school district or private school’s extended day child-care program. The school district or private school will retain a portion of the grant for administrative expenses and the remaining portion of the grant will be used to offset any fees charged to parents for the child-care services. |
