MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 11, 2012 04:42 PM
From: Senator John T. Yudichak
To: All Senate members
Subject: Introduction of Legislation Implementing the Regional Police Assistance Grant Program

I am planning on introducing legislation that would provide grants to municipalities for regionalizing police operations. A Regional Police Assistance Grant Program would be established under the Center for Local Government Services. The center would award grants to eligible municipalities that need financial assistance to regionalize their police operations with other municipalities.

The regionalization of police services can help to provide coverage to areas that currently lack police services. Regionalization can also ease the burden of funding a local police department. This legislation would offer grants for start up expenses, staff salaries, and police equipment to serve as incentive to establish regional police forces.

Last session this was SB 616 and the following Senators were cosponsors: GORDNER, FONTANA, ERICKSON, SOLOBAY, COSTA, BREWSTER, WASHINGTON AND BROWNE

Introduced as SB162
