Subject: | Resolution: April is Autism Awareness Month |
Soon, I will introduce a resolution designating April 2017 as “Autism Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. Autism is a severely incapacitating, lifelong developmental disability resulting in significant impairment of an individual’s ability to learn, develop healthy interactive behaviors and understand verbal, nonverbal and reciprocal communication. A survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that 1 in 45 children, ages 3 through 17, have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This is notably higher than the official government estimate of 1 in 68 American children with autism. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability, affecting more than two million individuals nationwide. According to the National Autism Association:
Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to raise awareness for persons on the Autism spectrum. |
