MEMORANDUM

To: All Senate members
Subject: Recognizing March 5-11 as “Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week"

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the week of March 5th through the 11th as “Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania. Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week is coordinated annually by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in an effort to increase education about this debilitating disease.

According to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), is a chronic neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system, which is comprised of the brain and spinal cord. There are four types of MS: relapsing-remitting, secondary-progressive, primary progressive and progressive relapsing. Currently, there are more than 400,000 people living with MS in the United States. Individuals are generally diagnosed with MS between ages 20 and 50, and statistics reveal that MS affects more women than men. Common symptoms of MS include: fatigue, weakness, spasticity, balance problems, bladder and bowel problems, numbness, vision loss, tremors, and depression. Unfortunately, there is no known cause or cure for MS.

Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week provides an opportunity for individuals living with MS, families, friends, and supporters to help educate others about this disease. Individuals are encouraged to participate in events sponsored by their local chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, which allow those with a strong commitment to MS to raise awareness and funds for the MS movement in creative ways.

By recognizing the week of March 5th through March 11th, 2017 as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week, I am encouraging citizens across the Commonwealth to take a proactive approach in learning more about Multiple Sclerosis and learning ways they can make a difference in the lives of those living with MS.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution.
