MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 21, 2016 04:17 PM
From: Senator Patrick M. Browne
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution designating November 2016 as “American Diabetes Month” in Pennsylvania

I will be introducing a resolution designating November 2016, as “American Diabetes Month” in Pennsylvania.

In the United States, nearly 30 million people – including 1.5 million in Pennsylvania - have diabetes, a serious disease with potentially life-threatening complications including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputation. Every 23 seconds, someone in the United States is diagnosed with diabetes.

An additional 86 million people in the United States are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Approximately 5% of diabetics are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes which is typically diagnosed in children and young adults and in a recent study of children in Philadelphia, the incidence rate of children with Type 1 diabetes increased 29% since 1989.

The prevalence of diabetes in this Commonwealth has nearly doubled since 1995 and it is the 7th leading cause of death in Pennsylvania.

To highlight the daily challenges of millions of Americans living with this chronic illness, the 2016 American Diabetes Month theme is This is Diabetes, with it’s goal to empower people at risk of developing diabetes and provide the tools necessary to prevent a diabetes diagnosis.

As part of American Diabetes Month, the Association will also be celebrating National Healthy Lunch Day on November 15, when everyone is encouraged to “lunch right with every bite” and make healthy food choices.

I hope that you will join me in co-sponsoring this resolution designating November 2016, as American Diabetes Month in Pennsylvania and be part of the American Diabetes Association’s movement to confront, fight and, most importantly, change the future of this deadly disease.
