MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 24, 2015 04:14 PM
From: Senator David G. Argall
To: All Senate members
Subject: Addressing pay disparity between corrections managers and officers

In the near future, I will introduce legislation that would correct the pay disparity between state corrections managers and officers.

Over the last few years, the Department of Corrections attempted to fix the pay disparity that resulted in corrections managers earning less than certain officers. However, a number of my constituents who work in correctional facilities informed me the problem still exists for several of the state’s 1,200 corrections managers.

My legislation would correct the problem by statutorily ensuring that pay increases for captains and lieutenants would keep pace with increases of sergeants and corrections officers.

This issue affects the morale of corrections officers and managers within our state prisons, which poses a threat to public safety. My legislation, which mirrors Act 204 of 1984, would eliminate the pay disparity between managers and their employees.

Introduced as SB1112
