Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 25, 2014 11:54 AM
From: Senator Stewart J. Greenleaf
To: All Senate members
Subject: Biomedical Research Day

I plan to offer a resolution that recognizes October 21, 2014, as “Biomedical Research Day” in Pennsylvania.

The biomedical research community in the United States and especially in this Commonwealth is recognized as the world leader in discovering knowledge that promotes health and the treatment of diseases. Biomedical research has helped increase the life span of people in the United States through the development of vaccines, antibiotics and anti-infective drugs.

Biomedical research has contributed to the elimination of many epidemic diseases, and in the United States biomedical research has helped to prevent numerous childhood killers. Biomedical researchers are working diligently toward cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, AIDS, cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, heart and lung diseases, mental illnesses, multiple sclerosis and countless other diseases that affect millions of people throughout the United States. This research has contributed to the health and well-being of animals through vaccines and has helped the prospects of endangered species by reducing diseases and promoting reproduction. Biomedical research offers the best hope for new breakthroughs in detecting and treating diseases in the future.

Recognizing the above, I believe it is important that the Senate recognize October 21, 2014, as "Biomedical Research Day" in Pennsylvania.
