Subject: Resolution Recognizing November 2014 as Diabetes Awareness Month in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing November 2014 as Diabetes Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

According to the most recent statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 29.1 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. Of the 29.1 million cases, 21 million cases are diagnosed and 8.1 million cases go undiagnosed. In addition, 86 million individuals are in a prediabetic state, making diabetes the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.

The most recent statistics regarding expenditures nationwide for the direct and indirect treatment of diabetes reflect costs of $245 billion. Complications from diabetes include blindness, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, nerve disease and amputations.

Proper management of diabetes through control of blood glucose levels, diet, and exercise has been shown to dramatically decrease the likelihood of the occurrence of complications. I plan to introduce this resolution in an effort to raise awareness about the disease and the importance of diabetes education in improving the quality of life for people living with the disease and to encourage healthy lifestyle habits.

Please join me in supporting this resolution recognizing November 2014 as Diabetes Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. If you have questions about this resolution, please contact my office at 717-787-5839.
