Subject: | Resolution recognizing October 2014 as "Domestic Violence Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing October 2014 as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.” My resolution designates the month of October 2014 as “Domestic violence Awareness Month” and encourages all Pennsylvanians to learn more about the causes, signs, preventions, and treatment for domestic violence. In addition, I encourage all members to wear purple on October 7, 2014 to show their support for Domestic Violence Awareness. As a survivor of domestic violence, I have dedicated my life to raising awareness to what I call the “big secret.” I believe it is our duty to raise public awareness of this epidemic and provide voices to those victims who feel powerless to escape the cycle of fear, shame, and violence cast by their abusers. According to the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 2013 saw at least 158 domestic violence-related deaths, a 10 percent increase over 2012. In addition, the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence has reported that between 2000 – 2009, at least 1,455 people died as a result of domestic violence-related incidents, a rate that has increased nearly 50% between 2007 and 2009. I invite you to join me in cosponsoring this worthy. If you have any questions, please contact my office. |
