MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 12, 2014 11:06 AM
From: Senator Christine M. Tartaglione
To: All Senate members
Subject: Co-Sponsorship of Resolution: World Suicide Prevention Day

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing September 10, 2014 as World Suicide Prevention Day.

Suicidal behavior has become a major public health concern, serving as the tenth leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of death around the world. Each year, almost one million people die from suicide, which equals one death every forty seconds. At this rate, the annual number of deaths from suicide exceeds the number of deaths from homicide and war combined.

This year, to celebrate the 12th anniversary of World Suicide Prevention Day, the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organization have selected the theme, “Suicide Prevention: One World Connected.” It reflects the importance of establishing and improving connections at various levels if we hope to prevent more suicides from occurring in the future. Whether reaching out to a lonely person as a friend, referring a medical patient to a mental health specialist for treatment or coordinating activities with other organizations to improve prevention efforts, members of the general public, medical doctors and field professionals, alike, are key elements in ending the suicide epidemic. Every person is connected to this goal and has an equally important role in accomplishing it.

I hope you will join me in raising awareness and encouraging greater connectedness to reduce the incidence of suicide during World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, 2014.
