Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 23, 2014 10:50 AM
From: Senator Shirley M. Kitchen
To: All Senate members
Subject: Juneteenth National Freedom Day "Juneteenth" Resolution

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing June 19, 2014 as Juneteenth National Freedom Day "Juneteenth" in Pennsylvania. Juneteenth commemorates the day in which the last of the slaves located in Galveston, Texas were informed of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is the oldest African-American holiday observance in the United States. Juneteenth is recognized as a holiday observance in over 40 states as a way to acknowledge the past and celebrate the present. I invite you to join me in co-sponsoring this resolution.

Thank you for your consideration.

Introduced as SR411
