Subject: | designating May 2014 as Melanoma/Skin Cancer Month |
In the near future I will be introducing a resolution which would designate May 2014 as Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month in the Commonwealth. The American Cancer Society estimates that 76,100 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2014 and that 9,710 deaths will occur from melanoma. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults 15-29 years old. It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. As you may know, the skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body and performs many essential tasks, such as regulating body temperature, protecting internal organs, providing sensation and supporting metabolic functions. It is my hope that this resolution declaring May 2014 as Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month will promote the prevention and early detection of melanoma and other skin cancers to individuals in the Commonwealth. |
