MEMORANDUM

From: Senator Christine M. Tartaglione
To: All Senate members
Subject: Co-Sponsorship: Older Americans' Month

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the month of May 2014 as Older Americans’ Month.

Since 1963, this nation has honored the legacies and ongoing contributions of older Americans during the month of May, and it has supported these individuals as they transition into their new phases of life. In Pennsylvania, during this monthly designation, we recognize the contributions made by older persons, and we pay tribute to the accomplishments of these individuals within our communities. This year, as we celebrate the theme “Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow.” we emphasize the importance of maintaining the health of individuals as they age.

Thanks to modern medicines and technologies, individuals are living longer and remaining active as they grow older; however, they must be made aware of the increased risks posed to them by accidental injuries and death, and they must be educated about how to prevent such potential dangers. As older persons pursue new challenges and adventures, participate in their communities and perform tasks around their homes, they require additional care from medical professionals and assistance from family and friends to preserve their health and ensure their safety. For all of their hard work and contributions, we owe these individuals our support, respect and gratitude. As such, on behalf of all older Pennsylvanians, I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this resolution.
