MEMORANDUM

To: All Senate members
Subject: Co-Sponsorship: Sexual Assault Awareness Month

In the near future, we intend to offer a resolution declaring April 2014 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Pennsylvania in an effort to raise awareness of and encourage public education on sexual violence. This year, the National Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign will focus on encouraging age-appropriate behavior and suitable relationships between adolescents and adults, as well as promoting youth participation in sexual violence prevention programs.

Rape and sexual assault impact women, children and men of all racial, cultural and economic backgrounds. Sexual assault can be devastating for the survivor, as well as the survivor’s family and friends. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, ninety-one percent of rape and sexual assault victims are female, and nine percent are male. Further, one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before reaching eighteen years of age.

Knowledge and awareness are the first steps toward prevention. It is important for all Pennsylvanians to learn about and understand these issues, so that they may speak out against sexual violence and stand up for the safety and well-being of others in this state. We hope you will join us in co-sponsoring this resolution.
