Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 18, 2014 11:08 AM
From: Senator Michael J. Stack
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution marking 2014 as the Year of the Veteran

In the near future I plan on offering a resolution to mark 2014 as the Year of the Veteran in Pennsylvania. This will help highlight and celebrate the accomplishments as well as continue to raise public awareness of issues related to veterans and the ongoing initiatives to serve those who have served.

Philadelphia is the birthplace of the United States Army, United States Navy and United States Marine Corps, establishing a link between our city and those who have served our country dating back to pre-Revolutionary War times. Erie, Gettysburg, Fort Pitt and countless other sites in our Commonwealth have played key roles in the molding and maturation of our great Nation.

Veterans from past wars and peace time as well as those currently returning from overseas military duty to Pennsylvania are part of the foundation of our community having served our Country in the Armed Forces, putting themselves in harms way, willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, to protect us and preserve our liberties.

There are roughly one million veterans - 88,000 veterans in Philadelphia alone - living in Pennsylvania with service spanning World War II until the present. Men and women, of all races, religions, ethnicities, gender-identifications and physical abilities. These men and women deserve a simple debt of gratitude. They deserve to be recognized and thanked for their sacrifices for the safety and security of our nation.

Please join me in honoring all of the men and women who have served by marking this year as the Year of our Veteran. Thank you for your consideration.
