Subject: | Co-Sponsorship of Resolution: International Day of Persons with Disabilities |
In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution observing December 3, 2013 as International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Today, almost fifteen percent of the world’s population lives with a disability. Many of these persons encounter obstacles to participation in their communities and are forced to live on the margins of society where they face stigma and discrimination. They are unable to gain equal access to education, employment, health care, transportation, political participation or justice. In an effort to help persons with disabilities gain the same opportunities available to other members of the public without fear of discrimination, International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an annual day of observance aimed at promoting accessibility and removing barriers for such persons. It provides an opportunity to raise awareness with the goal of full and equal enjoyment of human rights and participation in society by disabled residents. In recognition of this important cause, please join me in recognizing the 3rd day of December as International Day of Persons with Disabilities this year. |
