MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 20, 2013 03:30 PM
From: Senator Scott E. Hutchinson
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution Honoring Former Lt. Governor Charles Warren Stone

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution honoring former Lt. Governor Charles Warren Stone on the anniversary of his 170th birthday.

Mr. Stone was born June 29, 1843 in Groton, Massachusetts. He moved to Pennsylvania in 1863 and settled in Warren. In 1865, Mr. Stone was elected superintendent of schools of Warren County, Pennsylvania. That same year, Mr. Stone was chosen to serve as principal of the academy at Erie; and while teaching school, he studied law and was admitted to the Warren County bar in 1866.

Mr. Stone continued his public service as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1870 and 1871, and as a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1877 and 1878 where he served as Chairman of the Judiciary General Committee.

Mr. Stone served as Lieutenant Governor during the term of Governor Henry M. Hoyt from 1879 to 1883, and in 1887, he was appointed as Secretary of the Commonwealth and served in that post until his resignation to accept a nomination for Congress. Mr. Stone was elected to Congress and served until 1899. After his retirement from Congress, Mr. Stone returned to the practice of law and remained very active in his community.

Please join me in honoring Lt. Governor Charles Warren Stone for dedicating his life to working in public service in his community, state and country.

Please respond by close of business Friday, June 21, 2013, if possible. If you have any questions regarding this resolution, please contact Christine Zubeck in my office at 787-9684 or czubeck@pasen.gov.
