Subject: Mushroom Month in Pennsylvania
 
I will soon introduce a resolution designating September 2013 as “Mushroom Month” in Pennsylvania.

Thanks to its 69 mushroom farms, Pennsylvania leads the nation in mushroom production, producing nearly 500 million pounds annually with an estimated value of $453 million. That represents nearly one-half of the $1 billion mushroom crop in the United States.

Specifically, Pennsylvania’s mushroom producers supply 63 percent of the national agaricus mushrooms. Pennsylvania’s mushroom farms are family-owned and operated, some for as many as four generations.

The success of the mushroom industry greatly contributes to the economies of Chester County and Pennsylvania while preserving the Commonwealth’s agricultural traditions and customs.
