Subject: | Resolution: June 24, 2013 as Smith-Lemli-Oplitz Syndrome Awareness Day |
In the near future I will offer a resolution declaring June 24, 2013 as “Smith-Lemli-Oplitz Syndrome Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania. Smith-Lemli-Oplitz/RSH syndrome (SLO/RSH) is a recessive genetic metabolic disorder that affects the development of children before and after birth. Almost all SLO/RSH children are born with small brains and have various degrees of slow development and intellectual disability. While their life span can be limited by serious internal malformations, with proper nutrition and consultation with medical professionals, children with SLO/RSH may learn to walk and talk. According to the Smith-Lemli-Opitz/RSH Foundation, the syndrome affects 1 in every 20,000-40,000 births, including at least 40 families in Pennsylvania. |
