MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 20, 2013 01:54 PM
From: Senator Daylin Leach
To: All Senate members
Subject: Designating June 8th 2013 as Alex’s Lemonade Stand Day

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that will designate June 8, 2013 as “Alex’s Lemonade Stand Day” in Pennsylvania. Furthermore, the resolution will encourage all citizens to contribute to the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, as well as other pediatric cancer research programs.

As you may know, Alexandra Scott was my constituent. Young Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer, two days before her first birthday. During one of several treatments, Alex announced to her family that when she left the hospital she would like to have a lemonade stand. In July 2000, at the age of 4, Alex opened her first lemonade stand to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Alex continued to hold a lemonade stand annually until she passed away at the age of eight on August 1, 2004. Prior to her passing, Alex raised over $1 million for pediatric cancer research to help the thousands of children diagnosed with pediatric cancer each year.

Subsequently, Alex’s parents established the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to accept and manage the donations pouring in from around the country and the world. Annually, a weekend in June is designated “Lemonade Days.” During this weekend, thousands of “Alex’s Lemonade Stands” are held across the nation with profits being donated to support pediatric cancer research. Since 2000, the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised over $55 million for pediatric cancer research.

By designating June 8, 2013 as “Alex’s Lemonade Day,” Pennsylvanians will have the opportunity to join Alex in her fight to find a cure for pediatric cancer. I request that you join me in co-sponsoring this special legislation to help continue a young girl’s dream.
