Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 26, 2013 11:11 AM
From: Senator Scott E. Hutchinson
To: All Senate members
Subject: Recognizing May 14, 2013 as Apraxia Awareness Day in Pennsylvania

In the very near future, I plan on introducing a resolution recognizing May 14, 2013, as Apraxia Awareness Day in Pennsylvania.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a very challenging and complicated neurological speech disorder in children. This little known disorder makes it difficult or impossible for children to accurately produce sounds, syllables, and/or words despite knowing what they want to say and having a good understanding of language.

There is no known cause or cure for Apraxia and much more research is needed. Parents whose children have been diagnosed with Apraxia and many speech therapists who work with those children have emphasized the importance of early intervention and the significant impact it can have on speech development of a child with Apraxia.

Adoption of this resolution is necessary in giving a voice to those who have been diagnosed with Apraxia, and to raise awareness and strengthen the support systems in the lives of children with Apraxia so that each child is afforded their best opportunity to develop speech.

I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution.

If you have any questions regarding this resolution, please contact Christine Zubeck in my office at 787-9684 or czubeck@pasen.gov.
