Subject: | Publically-elected school board for City of the 1st Class (Philadelphia) |
In the near future, I plan on re-introducing SB 1210 from 2011-12 session. This was my proposal to allow for an elected school board from the City of Philadelphia, and the elimination of the School Reform Commission (SRC). Specifically, this bill would amend the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An act relating to the public school system, including certain provisions applicable as well to private and parochial schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the laws relating thereto," in school finances, further providing for distress in school districts of the first class; and providing for school board in distressed school districts. The SRC has made some troubling decisions to furlough teachers, close schools and cut costs drastically, with no community involvement or accountability. My bill would eliminate the SRC altogether, and provide an elected school board in Philadelphia. Philadelphia is the only one of the 501 school districts in the Commonwealth that has an appointed board and not an elected board. Co-sponsors from 2011-12 include Sen. Farnese, Sen. Washington and Sen. Ferlo |
