Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 14, 2013 02:15 PM
From: Senator Lisa Baker
To: All Senate members
Subject: U.C. Exemption for Student Employees at Summer Camps

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to amend the Pennsylvania Unemployment Compensation Law to exempt organized summer camp owners from paying unemployment taxes on full-time students they employ during the 13-week camp season.

Current law requires summer camp owners to pay unemployment contributions on the wages of student employees who are precluded from qualifying for unemployment benefits when they return to school. The Pennsylvania Camp Association estimates member camps pay an additional $5,000 to $6,000 per year to comply with the current law.

This legislation has been introduced by Representative Sandra Major as House Bill 858.

Thank you.

Introduced as SB849
