Subject: Block new Distinguished Warfare Medal
 
In the immediate future I will be introducing a resolution to ask that our federal lawmakers support legislation to block the Department of Defense from ranking the new “Distinguished Warfare Medal” equal to or above the Purple Heart. The new medal could be awarded to recipients that serve thousands of miles from combat, such as drone pilots.

While modern warfare certainly has technological aspects that we could never have dreamed of even a few years ago, this new medal sends a message that all the heroic effort and pride associated with a Purple Heart is somehow diminished.

It is our hope that the Pentagon will reconsider the ranking of this medal, but if not, we will urge Congress to act on legislation that is currently before the House.
