MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 31, 2013 12:59 PM
From: Senator Lisa M. Boscola
To: All Senate members
Subject: Establishment of an Academic Excellence Scholarship Program

In the near future, I plan to reintroduce legislation to establish an academic excellence scholarship program, and I invite you to join me as a co-sponsor.

This bill provides financial incentives for high-school students to attend college and stay in Pennsylvania once they’ve graduated.

It authorizes PHEAA to provide $5,000 grants to students that have demonstrated academic excellence. To qualify, students must:

- Be Pennsylvania residents
- Graduate in the top 5 percent of their high-school class
- Score at least a 2130 on their SATs, and
- Agree to work in Pennsylvania for at least 2 years after graduation.

If students earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher at the end of each academic year, they may continue to apply for grants for a maximum of 4 consecutive academic years.

This is a reintroduction of SB 727 from the previous legislative session. Co-sponsors included WILLIAMS, BROWNE, FERLO, COSTA,TARTAGLIONE, FONTANA, STACK, SOLOBAY, BREWSTER, WASHINGTON,
FARNESE, WOZNIAK AND RAFFERTY,

Introduced as SB747
