Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 18, 2013 11:03 AM
From: Senator Bob Mensch
To: All Senate members
Subject: LBFC Study of Physician Availability in Pennsylvania

I am re-introducing a resolution directing the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee (LBFC) to conduct a study of physician availability in the Commonwealth.

Specifically, the resolution will call for the LBFC to:
  1. Research current studies and literature on the scope and extent of shortages in physician supply, to examine factors contributing to the problem, and to assess current and projected physician staffing needs in PA.
  2. Identify and define reforms, initiatives and strategies, and other administrative and legislative actions being taken by both public and private agencies at the national level and in other states to increase the number of physicians in the workforce, and the results to date of these actions.
  3. Examine the response to the physician shortage by both public and private agencies in PA and to assess actions taken to date.

The Pennsylvania Medical Society supports this initiative. It was Senate Resolution 84 of last session and co-sponsors were RAFFERTY, D. WHITE, FONTANA, ARGALL, GREENLEAF, VOGEL, BROWNE, BREWSTER and YUDICHAK.
