Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 14, 2013 07:30 PM
From: Senator Andrew E. Dinniman
To: All Senate members
Subject: Thrift Month

I will soon introduce a resolution declaring January 2013 as “Thrift Month” in Pennsylvania and recognizing Jan. 17 through Jan. 23 as “National Thrift Week.”

National Thrift Week originally started on Jan. 17, 1916, in honor of and on the birthday of Benjamin Franklin, who is viewed as the “American Apostle of Thrift.” But where this event was once celebrated with schools opening and administering saving accounts for their students and with a general recognition of the value of hard work and discipline, neither this event nor these values are fully celebrated or appreciated to the extent they once were.

My resolution calls for declaring January “Pennsylvania Thrift Month”; it calls for observing “National Thrift Week” in Pennsylvania; and for urging individuals, families and government at all levels to exercise thrift and fiscal responsibility.
