Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 9, 2013 02:42 PM
From: Senator Timothy J. Solobay
To: All Senate members
Subject: State Fleet Natural Gas Vehicle Study

In the near future, I plan on re-introducing a resolution which urges the Department of General Services to conduct a study to determine the associated costs and feasibility of converting the state fleet from petroleum-fueled vehicles to natural gas vehicles.

Pennsylvania is at the forefront of the natural gas industry and our resource supply puts us in a position to reap great benefits from using this asset wisely. One of the ways in which we can do this is by setting an example for the Commonwealth through utilizing natural gas in our state fleet. This would encourage us to make the updates and changes to our infrastructure to handle the new automotive fuel technologies that are currently emerging. Along with the use of hybrid and electric vehicles, filling our cars with natural gas will take us a long way to reducing our dependence on foreign oil and boosting our economy.

Looking into the feasibility and costs of this conversion is the first step in a process to make the leader in domestic fuel. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this resolution and I look forward to the results of the study.

This legislation was SR166 of 2011-12. Previous cosponsors include: Costa, Alloway, Boscola, Browne, Ferlo, Fontana, Tartaglione, Waugh, M. White and Farnese.
