Subject: Condemning Tobacco Companies’ Practice of Targeted Advertising in Low-Income Communities

It is no secret that tobacco companies utilize targeted advertising in low-income communities. Research has found that tobacco companies have used various sales promotions over the past 60 years to appeal specifically to lower-income consumers. Low-income communities also have a higher density of tobacco retailers, and storefront advertisements for tobacco products in these retailers tend to be larger, promote methanol products, have a lower advertised price and be featured within the proximity of a school. These practices have likely contributed towards the considerably higher use of tobacco products and disproportionate rates of diseases caused by smoking, such as lung cancer, among low-income individuals.

It is for these reasons that I plan to introduce a resolution condemning tobacco companies’ practice of targeted advertising in low-income communities. The intent of my resolution is to bring greater awareness to this advertising and the negative effects this practice has had on these communities, which are already hindered by social and economic inequality.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. Thank you for your consideration.
