House of Representatives
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 28, 2018 10:13 AM
From: Representative Stephen Barrar
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution - Calling for the federal government to recognize the importance of durable, flood-resilient infrastructure

Soon, I will be introducing a resolution asking the federal government to strongly consider the following when addressing infrastructure priorities in the coming year:
  1. Improve resiliency requirements for buildings and infrastructure systems built before and after flood-related catastrophes;
  2. Enhance the use of natural defenses in planning and preparedness; and
  3. Reduce unsustainable development in high-risk areas.

I believe it is important for the federal government to recognize the impact that rising population changes have on our infrastructure along with land use patterns and severe weather. Since 2000, flood related disasters have caused more than $750 billion in losses around the country.

Over 250 elected officials from across the U.S. signed a Statement of Principles supporting Resilient Infrastructure that will reduce risk and meet our economic, environmental, and social needs.

Please consider joining me in sponsoring this timely resolution.
