Subject: | Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the 14th Amendment |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution commemorating the 150th anniversary of the ratification of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States on July 9, 2018. Over the past 150 years, Supreme Court cases have cited the 14th Amendment more than any other amendment, denoting its importance in upholding equality and moving society forward. Originally ratified in 1868, the amendment grants citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States” and requires equal protection under the law for all people. The amendment granted rights that previously had been denied based on race and has been used to combat other various types of injustice. Join me in recognizing the important role the 14th Amendment has played in our nation’s history by signing on as a co-sponsor to this resolution. |
