| Subject: | Resolution Recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Week and Month in October 2018 in Pennsylvania. |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the week following the second Monday in October as “Indigenous Peoples’ Week” and further recognizing the month of October 2018 as “Indigenous Peoples’ Month” in Pennsylvania. Indigenous peoples are peoples or ethnic groups who are the original inhabitants of a given region, not groups that have settled, occupied or colonized an area more recently. In the United States, Native American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians are recognized as Indigenous Peoples. Of the 50 states, Pennsylvania has one of the most robust Native American Indian histories. Without the help of the Indigenous People, our Commonwealth and our nation may not have survived. It was through their contributions in agricultural development, medicinal discoveries, environmental preservation, exploration and commerce, among others, that our country was able to expand and develop. History has often not recognized the contributions of Indigenous Peoples or credited them to others. I ask that you join me in co-sponsoring this legislation as a pledge to recognizing Indigenous Peoples and to strengthening the relationship between all citizens. Thank you.
