MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 1, 2018 01:35 PM
From: Representative Tedd C. Nesbit
To: All House members
Subject: Agricultural Hauling Permit

In the near future I plan on introducing legislation that would allow for an annual hauling permit to be issued for the movement of agricultural liming materials, agricultural seeds, and fertilizer. According to my legislation the vehicle cannot exceed 95,000 pounds and the permit would only authorize movement between the months of March and June.

Currently, farmers must travel at weight (80,000 pounds), which ultimately means more trips to deliver the necessary products to the farm, which means more truck traffic on the roads. Due to the unrelenting winter faced in certain parts of the Commonwealth, winter can extend well into April, and sometimes even May, leaving little time for the Commonwealth’s food growers to apply products to the farmlands and prime their soil for the next crop. By allowing these individuals the opportunity to travel slightly overweight, less trips would have to be made and fewer trucks would have to be on the road. This would provide them the opportunity to apply those products faster, thus, growing food faster.

Please join me in supporting the efforts of our farmers by co-sponsoring this piece of legislation.
