Subject: | Recognizing August 1-7, 2018, as “World Breastfeeding Week” |
It is well known that breastfeeding provides ideal nutrition for infants and contributes to their healthy growth and development, while also providing long-term health benefits to mothers and yielding economic benefits. Despite rising rates of breastfeeding nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that Pennsylvania has not yet met the national breastfeeding goals set by Healthy People 2020, a 10-year national objective plan for improving the nation’s health. To address this issue and encourage more women in the Commonwealth to breastfeed their babies, I plan to introduce a resolution in the near future designating August 1-7, 2018, as “World Breastfeeding Week” in Pennsylvania. The intent of my resolution is to support the overall goals of “World Breastfeeding Week” in creating greater awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding and its role in enhancing the wellbeing of all worldwide. I hope you will join me in this effort and I invite all members to co-sponsor this important legislation. |
