MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 23, 2018 02:44 PM
From: Representative Michael H. Schlossberg
To: All House members
Subject: Hate Crime Task Force

As you may know, there has been a startling increase in the incidents of hate and bias in the past year. In an effort to address this, I plan to introduce legislation that will create a Hate Crime Task Force under the Office of the Attorney General.

I believe that in order to fix this problem, it’s vital to get an accurate count of the number of incidents which have occurred in Pennsylvania. Currently records are kept in two distinctly separate information silos; the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission and their Advisory Councils, and the Office of the Attorney General. My legislation would create a Hate and Bias Task Force in the Office of the Attorney General with the overarching goal of sharing information amongst various stakeholders. Additionally, the Task Force would make recommendations to the Legislature about how we can improve our existing institutions and responses to combat hate and bias.

I hope you will join with me to co-sponsor this important legislation.
