MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 23, 2018 01:50 PM
From: Representative Jason Ortitay
To: All House members
Subject: School Safety Measures

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that requires public school entities to equip all security cameras with motion detectors and all school entities to conduct at least two security drills each year.

Specifically, beginning with the 2019-2020 school year, my bill requires each security camera and door on a public school’s campus to be equipped with a motion detector that notifies an employee of the public school, who is responsible for the security of the school, when the motion detector detects movement during normal school hours. Additionally, my proposal requires local law enforcement to have remote access to the live video from these security cameras.

Finally, beginning with the 2018-2019 school year, each school entity must conduct a minimum of two security drills each year in each school building.

Please join me in taking steps to further secure our school buildings and protect our students by co-sponsoring this legislation.
