MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 9, 2018 12:08 PM
From: Representative Anthony M. DeLuca
To: All House members
Subject: School Safety Drills

In the near future I will introduce legislation that would have school safety drills occur as frequently as fire drills. Currently, schools are required to have fire drills at least once per month. My bill would cause safety drills to alternate with fire drills on a monthly basis.

Pennsylvania recently enacted Act 55 which directs school buildings to have one school security drill per school year. While this is a good start, once a year is not sufficient to train students, teachers, administrators, law enforcement and emergency management personnel to deal with the possibility of sudden violent attacks occurring on our children. We need to get our kids safe, and we need to do it now.

Practicing drills more often will necessarily increase their effectiveness. When trouble strikes we need every person to know their part and to act quickly and decisively.

The law is already in place, but the drill frequency needs to be increased. Once a year is not sufficient, every other month makes much more sense.

Please support and cosign my legislation to step up available measures to protect our children in case of an armed attack.

Introduced as HB2259
