Subject: Resolution: Recognizing the Potential Long-Term Health Impacts of Exposure to Cell Phone Radiation

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the potential long-term health impacts of exposure to cell phone radiation.

Cell phones are ubiquitous and used by more than 90 percent of American adults, but their long-term effects on human health are still largely unknown. At issue are radiofrequency (RF) waves, a type of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation that cell phones use to communicate with cell phone towers. RF waves are known to be relatively harmless, however, the effects of low-dose exposure over time are still not proven. Some studies have indicated a possible link between exposure to RF waves and certain tumors, but the research is still largely inconclusive.

In the meantime, individuals can take some basic precautions to minimize exposure to RF waves from their cell phones, such as using a speakerphone or headset, sending text messages instead of making a call, and storing the phone away from your body.

Because of their pervasiveness in society, cell phones could represent a substantial public health issue if RF waves indeed can make people sick. As such, please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution recognizing the potential long-term health impacts of exposure to cell phone radiation.
