Subject: Resolution Recognizing the American Red Cross' "Sound the Alarm" Campaign from September 23 to October 15, 2017, in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing the American Red Cross’ “Sound the Alarm” campaign from September 23 to October 15, 2017, in Pennsylvania.

“Sound the Alarm” is a national campaign that was established to provide lifesaving assistance to residents in high-risk neighborhoods through the installation of free smoke alarms. It is estimated that American Red Cross volunteers and partner organizations will install over 100,000 free smoke alarms in homes located throughout 100 communities across the United States as part of the “Sound the Alarm” campaign. In preparation of the event, the American Red Cross has stressed that they will need the help and support of 35,000 volunteers to help ensure that they reach their goal.

According to the American Red Cross, on average, seven people die each day as a result of home fires, with the majority of victims being children and the elderly. In addition, home fires are responsible for over $7 billion in property damage annually.

The American Red Cross suggests the following ways that individuals can get involved in their communities to save lives and raise awareness to the dangers of home fires: volunteer to install free smoke alarms; fundraise to help “Sound the Alarm”; and make a donation to support the “Home Fire” campaign.

I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
