MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 19, 2017 01:36 PM
From: Representative Barry J. Jozwiak
To: All House members
Subject: Increasing Penalties for Trespassers

I intend to introduce a bill that will increase the minimum fine that applies when someone trespasses on another’s land. Right now, there is no minimum fine that applies. It has come to my attention that this lack of real consequences can result in irresponsible hunters brazenly walking through private property. While most sportsmen know not to act in this dangerous manner, those few reckless offenders are not deterred by a low fine. To prevent their conduct, my bill would impose a minimum fine for simple trespassing of $150, posted or not, and a minimum fine of $500 when the trespasser is told to leave but refuses. If on school property, and told to leave, the minimum fine is also $500. I hope you will join me in supporting this bill.

Introduced as HB1954
