MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 28, 2017 01:11 PM
From: Representative Ed Neilson
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution: September 13, 2017, as “National Celiac Disease Awareness Day”

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating September 13, 2017, as “National Celiac Disease Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania.

Celiac disease is an inherited autoimmune disorder that affects the digestive process of the small intestine by attacking it when a person consumes gluten. As a result, celiac disease effectively inhibits the absorption of important nutrients into the body. If left untreated, celiac disease can lead to the development of other disorders, infertility and, in some cases, cancer. Celiac disease affects approximately 3 million people in the United States and can be difficult to diagnose because patients may experience symptoms that are related to other diseases or are entirely asymptomatic.

The only treatment for celiac disease is lifelong adherence to a strict gluten-free diet, as no known cure exists. In an effort to raise awareness of this disease, advocates have celebrated September 13 as “National Celiac Disease Awareness Day” to honor the doctor who identified the link between celiac disease and diet, Dr. Samuel Gee, who was born on September 13, 1839.

Please join me in raising awareness of celiac disease and supporting Pennsylvanians living with the disease by co-sponsoring this important resolution.
